Advanced Search: Basic Steps
-
Scroll down the search page to modify settings (optional).
-
Enter a search query in the Advanced Search text box. A query can contain search terms or set references or a combination of the two.
-
Click Search.
-
In the Search History table below the search form, click the number in the Results column to view records that satisfy your search. Web of Science creates a results set for each query that finds records.
Search Query Rules
-
Each search term must be prefaced by a field tag followed by the equal sign (=).
-
Combine search terms with logical operators (AND, OR, NOT, SAME).
-
You can enclose the logical expression in parentheses and use a single field tag. The following are equivalent searches:
AD=Merck OR AD=Sanofi
AD=(Merck OR Sanofi)
- Extraneous spaces are ignored. For example, extra spaces around opening and closing parentheses ( ) and equal (=) signs are ignored.
-
You may combine searches of different fields in the same query. For example: AD=Sanofi AND TS=steroid*
- You may combine a set search and a term search in one query. For example, #3 OR TS=endomorphin* analog*
-
The total number of search sets that you can create during a session is 200.
