FAPESP (Brazil)
FAPESP Category to Web of Science Category Mapping 2012 (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet, 76.0 kB, info)
Scheme Scope
The FAPESP classification scheme was created by the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP.
The FAPESP classification hierarchy is broken up into two levels: nine (9) high-level categories and seventy-two (72) more detailed categories. Data on research performance data in high-level fields incorporate data on research performance in subordinate fields. For example, a report on research in Health Sciences (4) will include data on research in all seven subordinate subject fields (4.1-4.7); however, because of journal overlap between Web of Science subject areas, the figures for the high-level fields will not necessarily equal the sum of the subordinate fields.
All Web of Science subject areas are represented in the mapping, and multiple Web of Science subject areas can be mapped to the same FAPESP category. However, in nearly all cases (save for HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE in FAPESP 7.1 and 7.5), subject areas are mapped to only one FAPESP category.
Scheme Type
Category-to-category mapping where FAPESP classifications are mapped to current Web of Science subject areas. (Web of Science subject areas current as of 31 December 2012.)
Method
The FAPESP classification scheme was created by the São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP as part of an effort to evaluate the scientific and technological development of the Brazilian State of São Paulo (http://www.fapesp.br/en/).
Category elements within the FAPESP category scheme were compared to Scope Notes for the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) (http://science.thomsonreuters.com/mjl/scope/), and each Web of Science subject area was assigned to a FAPESP subordinate subject code with manual input; high-level field values were created by de-duplicating Web of Science-to-FAPESP subordinate code relationships.
The mapping of Web of Science subject area to FAPESP category must be reviewed each year since Web of Science subject areas may change from one year to the next.

Research Area Scheme Selection and Total Results
Each Research Area scheme maps uniquely to the research areas/journals established with the Web of Science Core Collection. For that reason, document totals within the results table will not necessarily correspond to the same total displayed when Web of Science is selected. You can view how categories relate to those in Web of Science Core Collection by viewing the mappings included in each of the Research Area descriptions.
